Abstract: The History of the International Mathematical Olympiad

Professor Jozsef Pelikan participated in many national and international mathematics competitions while a high-school student and won many of them. He participated as a contestant in four International Mathematical Olympiads (IMOs): in 1963 he won a silver medal, and in the years 1964, 1965 and 1966 he won three gold medals. He also won a special prize in two of those years. He has had an active interest in mathematics competitions ever since. Professor Jozsef Pelikan has served on the Committee of the oldest mathematics competition in the word, the Hungarian Kurschák Competition (which started in 1894) since 1971. He was one of the organizers of the IMO held in Keszthely, Hungary in 1970, and one of the chief organizers and Chairman of the Problem Selection Committee of the IMO held in Budapest, Hungary in 1982. Since 1988 he has been the Leader of the Hungarian Team participating in the IMOs. In the period 1992-2002 he was elected member of the leading body of the IMOs, the Advisory Board (IMOAB), and in the period 2002-2010 he was Chairman of the IMOAB.

The 56th annual congress of the South African Mathematical Society will take place at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Campus.  The congress takes place over three days, from Wednesday, 30th October to Friday, 1st November 2013.

The SAMS annual congress provides a unique platform for South African mathematicians to meet and exchange ideas, showcase cutting edge research in the mathematical sciences and to start new collaborations and friendships. As well as the core areas of applied and pure mathematics, we encourage significant interdisciplinary collaborations that showcase contributions that mathematics can make in addressing the needs of the South African economy. The congress provides a golden opportunity for young researchers to participate in a national conference and to meet and exchange ideas with more experienced colleagues. SAMS 2013 encourages younger colleagues and postgraduate students to share their contributions in all areas of mathematics with the broader community of mathematicians in South Africa.

We encourage colleagues to submit suggestions for special sessions, and to register early for the congress.

We look forward to welcoming you to the City of Choice, Pietermaritzburg.
